To Double Cleanse or Not? The Definitive Guide to Truly Clean Skin

If you’ve been scrolling through skincare social media, you’ve heard the term "Double Cleansing." But for many of my clients here in Evergreen, it sounds like just another marketing tactic to sell more soap. As a cosmetic formulator, I look at skin through the lens of chemistry. The truth is: One wash is rarely enough. Here is the science of why, how, and when you should be doubling up.

What Exactly is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a two-step process used to remove two different types of "debris" from your face:

  • Step One: An oil-based cleanser (balm or oil) to dissolve "lipophilic" materials like makeup, heavy mineral SPF, and your skin's own sebum.

  • Step Two: A water-based cleanser (cream or gel) to actually clean the skin’s surface and remove sweat and environmental pollutants.

Why Can’t I Just Wash Twice with My Cleanser?!

This is where the confusion—and the irritation—starts. Most average cleansers are water-based. Because oil and water don’t mix, a water-based cleanser often just slides right over your mascara or that high-altitude mineral sunscreen. You end up scrubbing harder to get it off, which damages your moisture barrier.

By using an oil-based step first, you are using the Like Dissolves Like principle. The oil bonds to the debris and lifts it away without you having to tug at your skin.

Who Should Be Doing This?

You should double cleanse if:

  • You wear SPF: Mineral sunscreens (Zinc/Titanium) are designed to "stick" to the skin. A single wash often leaves a film behind.

  • You wear makeup: Even "clean" or light makeup requires an oil bond to fully break down.

  • You have oily or acne-prone skin: It sounds counterintuitive, but oil cleansers are incredibly effective at removing excess sebum from pores.

When Should It Be Done?

Nighttime only. In the morning, a simple single cleanse (or even just a splash of tepid water) is usually enough. You haven't been exposed to the elements or SPF in your sleep. Save the "heavy lifting" for your PM routine to reset your skin for your overnight repair products.

How To Double Cleanse Correctly (The 60-Second Rule)

  1. The Dry Start: Apply your oil or balm to DRY skin with dry hands. Massage for about 45 seconds. This gives the oil time to break down the bonds of your makeup and SPF.

  2. The Emulsify: Add a little warm water to your hands and continue massaging. The oil will turn milky. Rinse thoroughly.

  3. The Second Act: While your skin is still damp, apply your water-based cleanser. Massage gently for 30 seconds and rinse.

My Formulator’s Warning: Avoid the "Squeaky Clean"

If your skin feels tight, "plastic-y," or squeaky after cleansing, you’ve gone too far! You’ve stripped your acid mantle. We do not want that!

In my studio, I advocate for clean, gentle, non-stripping formulas. My favorite duo for Colorado skin involves a nourishing lipid-rich oil like Odacite’s Montana Harvest Oil Cleanser or Phytodermix Geranium Glow Oil Cleanser followed by a pH-balanced cleanser such as Phytodermix Milk & Honey Cleanser. This leaves the skin hydrated and ready to absorb your serums.
